Youth in Teacher Apprenticeship Pathways: How to “TAP” into Youth in the Education Sector

Event

Interest in educator apprenticeship has exploded over the past several years. Many state and district leaders are interested in apprenticeship as a strategy to grow the pool of teaching candidates and to create more accessible and affordable pathways into the profession. Youth apprenticeships--which typically start when students are enrolled in high school--is one emerging model that’s shown promise in creating structured pathways for teens to enter the educator workforce. But how can apprenticeship models be adapted to successfully serve youth and young adults interested in teaching?

This session will dive deeper into components of registered apprenticeship and participants will learn how these components can be adapted for youth participants: paid work experiences, on-the-job learning under the supervision of a skilled employee mentor, and credit-bearing instruction delivered in a classroom (often called supplemental or related instruction).

Attendees will hear from practitioners in the field how youth can enter the pathway, what roles they play, how positions are paid, and how the experience is part of an education and credential pathway.
