In 2017, the Appleton Coated paper mill, a major provider of jobs in Combined Locks, Wisconsin, was forced into receivership and sold to an industrial scrapper. In One Day Stronger, Tom Nelson, county executive of Wisconsin’s Outagamie County, recounts the story of what happened next, as he worked with the mill’s innovative union—Local 2-469 of the United Steelworkers—and Appleton Coated’s dedicated executive team, to save the mill from closure. Though the events of the book took place in one small town in Wisconsin, One Day Stronger has important lessons for policymakers and for American manufacturing more broadly.
