Lieutenant Colonel Dan Ward (USAF, ret) was a fellow in New America's Cybersecurity Initiative. He is the author of F.I.R.E.: How Fast, Inexpensive, Restrained, and Elegant Methods Ignite Innovation (Harper Business, 2014) and The Simplicity Cycle: A Field Guide To Making Things Better Without Making Them Worse (Harper Business, 2015). He recently launched a consultancy to help clients reduce the cost, time, and complexity associated with innovation. Previously Dan served as an Air Force acquisition officer for more than 20 years, where he specialized in leading high-speed, low-cost technology development programs and helped establish the Air Force Research Laboratory’s rapid innovation process. He has been featured in publications from the White House, the US Senate, and the British Parliament. His own writing has appeared in outlets such as Forbes, The Boston Globe, Armed Forces Journal, Time Magazine’s Battleland Blog, the Pakistani Army’s magazine, Hilal, and the British Army Yearbook. Dan holds three engineering degrees and received the Bronze Star Medal for his service at NATO Headquarters in Afghanistan.
