Andrea Elliott, 2016 Emerson Collective Fellow, was awarded the 2022 prize in general nonfiction for her book Invisible Child: Poverty, Survival & Hope in an American City.
The Pulitzer Prize board called Elliott’s book “an affecting, deeply reported account of a girl who comes of age during New York City’s homeless crisis–a portrait of resilience amid institutional failure that successfully merges literary narrative with policy analysis."
Azmat Khan, 2017 ASU Future of War Fellow, was awarded the 2022 prize in international reporting for her work in the New York Times. Matthieu Aikins, Class of 2017, also contributed to the reporting.
The board awarded the prize to the Times team "for courageous and relentless reporting that exposed the vast civilian toll of U.S.-led airstrikes, challenging official accounts of American military engagements in Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan."
Anand Gopal, Class of 2014, was nominated in the feature writing category for his writing in the New Yorker, "The Other Afghan Women."
These are the third and fourth Pulitzer Prizes for New America National Fellows. In 2021 Marcia Chatelain, 2017 Eric & Wendy Schmidt Fellow, was awarded the prize in history for her book Franchise. In 2019 Eliza Griswold, class of 2010, was awarded the prize for her book Amity and Prosperity. In 2020 George Packer, Class of 2017, was nominated for his book Our Man.
