A New National Security Innovation Base

In the 2017 National Security Strategy, the Trump administration introduced the phrase “National Security Innovation Base” as a critical component of its vision of American security. Yet what exactly constitutes the base–a wide ranging term that includes academia, the private sector, and the national labs–remains undeveloped. Even less is known about how to “protect and harness” the country’s compelling knowledge and resource base to further national security objectives.

New America is pleased to welcome Congressman Mike Gallagher (WI-08), a member of the House Committee on Armed Services, Mr. Eric Chewning, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Manufacturing and Industrial Base Policy, and Ashley Larson, Vice President at Revolution Growth, a private equity and venture capital firm, for a discussion of what America’s National Security Innovation Base looks like in the 21st century and how to protect and channel its power.
