Reports

New America is reporting on how communities in California are reforming the way early childhood systems work and the way teachers are trained. Our aim is to help the public and policymakers better understand how to improve teaching and learning so young children have a solid foundation for growth and development. Our reporting has a special focus on Fresno, Oakland, and San Jose.

These reports dig into promising work across California, explore efforts to improve teaching and caregiving for young children in three communities, and offer recommendations for improving California workforce policies.

Sarah Jackson is a California-based journalist covering education, child welfare, and workforce development. Sarah spent nine years as partner at HiredPen Inc. working closely with leading academics, foundations and think tanks to get research into the hands of policymakers. A former newspaper reporter, Sarah holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Northwestern University and a joint master's degree in urban policy and planning and child development from Tufts University. Laura Bornfreund is a senior fellow in the early and elementary education with the Education Policy program at New America.

Lisa Guernsey is director of the Learning Sciences Exchange (LSX) and a senior director and strategic advisor in the Education Policy program at New America.

Amaya Garcia is the Director of PreK-12 Research and Practice with the Education Policy program at New America.
