After a 20-year effort by the United States to bring democracy to Afghanistan, it took only days for the Taliban to regain control of the country once President Biden pulled out U.S. troops. While Americans evacuated the U.S. embassy, thousands of Afghans — many of whom had aided the U.S. — rushed to the Kabul airport in an attempt to flee the country, fearing retaliation from the Taliban. Many are asking: Did the United States do the right thing? And what comes next?

Join the International Security Program for a discussion between experts on the evolving situation in Afghanistan. Hear from Roya Rahmani, former Afghan ambassador to the United States, Peter Bergen, author of the recent book The Rise and Fall of Osama Bin Laden, and Candace Rondeaux, former strategic advisor to the U.S. Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction, on what the resurgence of the Taliban means for the future of the country and for U.S. national security.
