Digital and Environmental Justice in the Era of Climate Change
Presented in partnership with Civic Hall
Event
As global institutions like the United Nations turn to their attention to human rights and climate change, local groups have been fostering the links between natural environments and digital environments for more than a decade.
Seven years ago, Allied Media Projects in Detroit and the Media Mobilizing Project in Philadelphia each led the creation of a Digital Justice Coalition to support an Internet infrastructure that could better serve their communities. Access to inclusive technologies became critical to participation in all areas of community-building, including the fight against climate change.
Earlier this year, a coalition of groups from six Superstorm Sandy-impacted neighborhoods in New York City launched Resilient Networks, a community wireless initiative led by New America's Resilient Communities program and implemented through the New York City Economic Development Corporation's RISE : NYC program. Drawing on the work in Detroit and Philadelphia, these groups devised a new coalition, aligning a climate justice agenda with a digital justice framework, to build a future where technology builds resilience, preparedness, and equitable economic development.
Join New America's Resilient Communities program, along with representatives from Detroit and Philadelphia Digital Justice Coalitions and other local groups, to release the new Resilient Networks principles and discuss how technology can make local voices more loudly heard.
