The Price of Free
A Screening and Conversation with Kailash Satyarthi
Event
“Why do we people have so many dreams, and they have none? This has gone so deep to my heart, and that is when I started working with poor children.” –Kailash Satyarthi, Winner, 2014 Nobel Peace Prize
On Friday, November 2nd, join New America NYC and Participant Media at Betaworks Studios for a screening of The Price of Free, winner of the 2018 Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize for Best Documentary, followed by a conversation with Nobel Peace Laureate Kailash Satyarthi about his life-long devotion to ending child labor practices and his global movement to free every child from slavery.
Today, a rising middle class and the global desire for fast fashion and cheap goods fuel a limitless demand for low-cost labor, and lead to the modern-day slavery of more than 152 million child workers around the world.
The Price of Free, from director Derek Doneen and Oscar-winning filmmaker Davis Guggenheim (“An Inconvenient Truth,” “He Named Me Malala”), tracks Kailash Satyarthi and his team of undercover operatives and camera crews in India on raids to rescue children as young as five from horrific conditions—in factories, circuses, fields, and brothels--and follows his months-long efforts to rehabilitate them and return each child to their family hundreds of miles away. We watch Satyarthi take on one of his most challenging missions to date: finding Sonu, a young boy trafficked to Delhi for work who has been missing for eight months.
Satyarthi's warmth and passion have gained international support for his philosophy that each child should be allowed to embrace their childhood. He gives them support, clothes, medical care and an education. Despite death threats, injuries, arrests, and the murder of his colleagues, Satyarthi and his Save the Childhood Movement has now rescued more than 87,000 children.
