Gus is committed to improving how we teach about technology in formal education as well as in the way we craft interfaces to guide user behavior. Bringing this to OpenITP, she will be working on trainings, conferences, and UX.
Gus received a Google Academic Research Award grant to continue her dissertation work on user difficulties with search and online navigation, and has subsequently written on user activity for ReadWriteWeb and .net Magazine. She has done user research for McGraw Hill and Second Life.
Gus is the founder and producer of The Media Show, a YouTube-based series on media and digital literacy which won the Media That Matters festival's Fair Use award in 2010. She has been an organizer of the Hackers On Planet Earth (HOPE) conference since 2010, curating speakers, art, and music. In 2009-2011, she could be heard on the radio show Off The Hook. Gus did her doctoral and masters work at Columbia University's Teachers College, and is an alumna of Hampshire College.
