Ryan Gallagher is a Scotland-born, London-based journalist and a Future Tense Fellow at the New America Foundation.
He reports at Slate from the intersection of surveillance, national security, and privacy, focusing on the emergence of new technologies and their implications for society. His work on an array of subjects has appeared in publications including the Guardian, the New Statesman, the Sydney Morning Herald, and the Financial Times.
Since 2011, Ryan has broken national stories about secretive surveillance techniques used by authorities in the United Kingdom, revealed links between Western technology firms and computer snooping attacks on activists in North Africa, interviewed some of the world's most elusive hackers, and shed light on legally dubious satellite tracking tactics used by private investigators across the United States.
He graduated as a master of science from the University of Edinburgh’s college of humanities and social science in 2010 and was awarded first class honours as a bachelor of arts in media and sociology from the University of Abertay, Dundee, in 2009. He is accredited with the United Kingdom’s National Council for the Training of Journalists and a member of the National Union of Journalists.
