Shawna Shapiro is an Associate Professor at Middlebury College, where she teaches courses in Writing, Linguistics, and Education. Prior to completing a PhD in English Language and Rhetoric at the University of Washington, she was a middle and high school teacher. Shapiro’s research focuses on the transition to higher education for immigrant and refugee students. Her work has appeared in many journals, including Research in the Teaching of English, Teaching and Teacher Education, and Equity & Excellence in Education. Shawna has also written for public audiences, including pieces with Inside Higher Ed and The Conversation. Her third book, Cultivating Critical Language Awareness in the Writing Classroom, will be available with Routledge in February 2022.
