Women’s Empowerment as a Foreign Policy Goal

In partnership with New America, the Chicago Council on Global Affairs’ 2016 Annual Foreign Policy Survey examined Americans’ attitudes on women’s empowerment as a foreign policy goal -- the first time questions on gender have been asked in a major foreign policy survey. The survey focuses on American attitudes towards foreign policy, with special attention paid to supporters of Donald Trump and how their attitudes differ from Americans overall, Democrats, and even the Republican Party.

The largest divides came on issues related to immigration, with smaller gaps on attitudes toward globalization and international trade -- even as clear majorities of all political stripes continue to support an active US role in the world. This unanimity makes the strong divisions by sex and political affiliation we found on views of the importance of women’s rights all the more striking. You can read the full report here.
