Leslie Villegas partnered with TNTP and EduRecoveryHubto create a resource for education leaders and advocates at the local level to help them determine whether ESSER/ARP funds are being used to help English learners.
Multilingual learners were disproportionately impacted by the pandemic both inside and outside the classroom. Remote learning closed these students off from critical support systems and as a result, their academic and linguistic growth suffered setbacks. Multilingual learners are more likely to attend high-poverty schools which means they face sizable opportunity gaps. Congress has appropriated historic amounts of funding and we have the chance to ensure these resources address long-standing inequities in the educational opportunities afforded these students. The following practices have been identified and vetted by a panel of expert organizations and individuals on the EduRecoveryHub.org site as promising practices that directly address multilingual students’ needs in the wake of the pandemic. These intentional investments with clear considerations for multilingual learners offer a path forward for other schools and districts looking to make meaningful change to the systemic barriers facing these students and their families.
