On July 30, 1965, President Johnson signed into law the legislation establishing Medicare and Medicaid. On Saturday July 25, C-SPAN Radio airs President Johnson’s 1964 and '65 calls as he fights to win Congressional approval of the measure. You’ll hear his calls with chief Congressional aide Larry O’Brien, key members of Congress, including Senator Albert Gore, Sr., House Ways and Means Committee chairman Wilbur Mills, and pediatrician and activist Benjamin Spock. Also, an interview with historian and author Julian Zelizer, whose books include: The Fierce Urgency of Now: Lyndon Johnson, Congress and the Battle for The Great Society.
