The Next Disaster

Zaha Hassan wrote for Zeit Online on Palestine and the US embassy move:

The Gaza Strip is only a short drive from Jerusalem, but it is another planet, a parallel universe. Black clouds of smoke hover over the coastal enclave as Israeli soldiers shoot at Palestinian protesters, killing at least 61 Palestinians and injuring more than 2,700 people. This happens on the eve of Nakba Day, the day of the catastrophe, when the Palestinians recall the displacement and flight of hundreds of thousands of people during the Israeli founding of 1948.
In Jerusalem, where the US has opened its new embassy, the sky is blue and the American and Israeli officials celebrating the 70th anniversary of the founding of the State of Israel are jubilant. While rifle fire is being fired on the Palestinians in Gaza, the reorientation of US policy in Jerusalem threatens to turn the Israeli-Palestinian conflict into a religious struggle.
