New America to Host Public Event with H.E. Dr. Hassan Rouhani, President of Iran

Washington, DC — On Wednesday, September 24, New America will host an address and discussion with H.E. Dr. Hassan Rouhani, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

In his first public remarks ahead of his much anticipated address at the United Nations General Assembly, President Rouhani will share his views on his first year in office, his domestic and international priorities ahead, his vision for stabilizing the Middle East, and his thoughts about the future of Iran’s relationship with the United States.

New America Trustee Fareed Zakaria will introduce President Rouhani and moderate the discussion following his address. Suzanne DiMaggio, a Senior Fellow and Director at New America, will present welcoming remarks.

"As leaders gather in NYC for the opening of the United Nations General Assembly, the world’s attention will focus on Hassan Rouhani as he makes his second visit to the United States since assuming the presidency of Iran one year ago," said New America President Anne-Marie Slaughter. “New America was established to foster the debates and dialogue needed to guide America in an era of profound change, and it is in this spirit that we present President Rouhani.”

“Direct bilateral exchanges between the U.S. and Iran on Iran’s nuclear program — which were first conducted under-the-radar beginning in 2012 and now occur on a regular basis within the context of the P5+1 nuclear talks — are reaching their most critical moment,” said New America Senior Fellow Suzanne DiMaggio. “We look forward to engaging President Rouhani in a discussion on the prospects for reaching a final nuclear deal, as well other priority issues, including the rise of the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq, and the future of Afghanistan as the U.S. military withdraws, among others.”
