WASHINGTON, D.C. – New America is pleased to announce that Moira Shourie, executive director of Zócalo Public Square, and Monica C. Lozano, president and CEO of the College Futures Foundation, have joined the New America board of directors. Shourie and Lozano are both highly accomplished leaders, with experience in media, journalism, business and education.
Moira Shourie is the executive director of Zócalo Public Square, a California-based unit of Arizona State University that aims to connect people to ideas and to each other by examining essential questions in an accessible, broad-minded, and democratic spirit. Earlier in her career, Shourie was part of the startup team that launched Outlook, now one of India’s most widely read news magazines. She was the first music programmer of MTV India and her career with MTV Networks International spanned channel launches throughout Europe, Asia, Australia and Africa. She is a 2021 Sulzberger Fellow at Columbia Journalism School and has served on the board of KIPP SoCal Schools. Shourie holds degrees from St. Stephen’s College in Delhi University and Emerson College.
“There has never been a more exciting time to contribute to the work being done at New America. This organization is committed to connecting communities and ideas and I am looking forward to helping advance the conversations New America invites in addressing the complexities of America’s democracy,” Moira Shourie said.
Monica C. Lozano is the president and CEO of the College Futures Foundation, a California-based private foundation that partners with organizations and leaders across the state to catalyze systemic change, increase college degree completion, and close equity gaps so that educational opportunity becomes a reality for every student, regardless of skin color, zip code, or income. Lozano spent thirty years in media as editor and publisher of La Opinión, the largest Spanish language newspaper in the country, and as chairman and CEO of the parent company, ImpreMedia. Lozano serves on the boards of various corporate, civic and nonprofit organizations and was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2016.
“New America is home to inspiring researchers, innovators, and storytellers working to make the world a more just and equitable place. I am pleased to partner with New America in its mission of public problem-solving at a moment in this nation’s history that will require the type of bold ideas and collaborative policy solutions New America champions,” Monica C. Lozano said.
New America’s board of directors is chaired by Helene Gayle, president and CEO of The Chicago Community Trust, and includes some of our nation’s leading thinkers working in collaboration with New America to meet this moment of advancing equality and preserving democracy for all citizens. Shourie and Lozano bring their expertise to a growing board of directors with strong experience, knowledge and leadership across a diverse set of sectors including health care, media, education, technology, real estate, civic engagement, retail management, financial services, philanthropy and nonprofit innovation.
“I am delighted to welcome Monica C. Lozano and Moira Shourie to New America’s board of directors. Monica and Moira are trailblazing leaders in their fields who display a wealth of innovative thinking and a dedication to creating a more equitable society,” New America Board Chair Helene Gayle said.
“Moira Shourie and Monica C. Lozano both bring to New America profound expertise and a deep appreciation for the power of storytelling in our society. Their experience engaging with and lifting up diverse communities, stories, and voices will play a valuable role in New America’s work. The years ahead will be a critical time in this country; I look forward to collaborating with Moira and Monica in New America’s work to bring us closer to this nation’s highest ideals,” New America CEO Anne-Marie Slaughter said.
