OTI senior policy counsel Lauren Sarkesian is quoted in an article from The Hill about the expansion of acoustic gunshot detection software company ShotSpotter, discussing the concerns of OTI and other members of the D.C. Community Oversight of Surveillance Coalition, which is working to prevent government surveillance abuses in the city.

“These technologies really certainly pose clear threats to our privacy, especially when used in an interconnected way, they can sort of map our whereabouts,” Lauren Sarkesian, senior policy counsel at New America’s Open Technology Institute, told The Hill.

“A lot of these technologies are very secretly acquired and deployed on citizens like you and me, and people just don't have awareness of not only that they’re abused but what the impact is,” Sarkesian said.
