Alexander “Sandy” Pope IV is an associate professor of education and Director of the Institute for Public Affairs and Civic Engagement at Salisbury University. He teaches about social studies and civic engagement, and studies interactions between classroom instruction and community engagement. He was named 2018’s Wilson H. Elkins Endowed Professor from the University System of Maryland, based on the success of the Civic Engagement Across the Curriculum faculty curriculum development program he has run at Salisbury University since 2014. He earned the 2022 Barbara Burch Award for Faculty Leadership in Civic Engagement, and the 2023 We the People Award for Excellence and Innovation from the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. Pope’s first book Becoming a Holocaust Educator: Purposeful Pedagogy through Inquiry, co-edited with Jennifer Lemberg, is available from Teachers College Press.
A classroom teacher for nine years, Pope completed a BA in History/Philosophy at Colorado College, an MA in History and Curriculum & Instruction at Texas State University at San Marcos, and a PhD in social studies education at Teachers College, Columbia University.
