Washington, DC — New America announced today that it is partnering with Defense One, Atlantic Media’s premiere digital national security and defense publication, to produce editorial coverage and events around New America’s “Future of War” project. The partnership will feature content from New America’s brand-new initiative exploring the social, political, economic, and cultural implications of the changing nature of war and conflict.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with Defense One. Defense One’s thorough, well reported and deeply analyzed coverage of the military makes them a natural partner for the ‘Future of War’ project,” said Peter Bergen, vice president at New America and co-director of the “Future of War” project.

“At Defense One, our theme is ‘the future of defense’ and the evolving global security landscape,” said Executive Editor Kevin Baron. “New America’s ‘Future of War’ project is a perfect fit, and we are excited to host analysis and commentary from New America’s leading national security thinkers in order to facilitate these important conversations.”

“Future of War” will launch in early February, with articles and commentary published on DefenseOne.com, paving the way for an inaugural conference on February 24 and 25, 2015 in Washington, D.C.

In association with Arizona State University’s newly created Center on the Future of War, the “Future of War” project is managed by a team of staff and fellows based at New America including journalists, legal scholars, former military officials, policy experts and others, and will convene some of the most creative and influential thinkers, writers, and decision-makers dealing with war and conflict to produce bold conceptual frameworks, create legal and policy proposals, and host live events.

The “Future of War” team includes Anne-Marie Slaughter, president and CEO of New America, former dean of the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University, former head of policy planning for the U.S. State Department, and author and editor of six books; Peter W. Singer, strategist and senior fellow at New America, named one of the Top 100 Global Thinkers by Foreign Policy magazine, author of Corporate Warriors, Children at War and Wired for War; Doug Ollivant, former director, National Security Council, former counterinsurgency advisor in Afghanistan, and leader of the team that wrote the 2006-7 Baghdad "surge" plan; Sharon Burke, former assistant secretary of defense for operational energy and senior fellow, New America; Alan Davidson, New America's vice president for technology policy and strategy and director of the Open Technology Institute, former director of public policy for Google in the Americas; David Kilcullen, senior fellow at New America and former special advisor to the Secretary of State from 2007-2009, senior advisor to Gen. David Petraeus in Iraq in 2007, and the author of Accidental Guerrilla; Tim Maurer, research fellow at New America, focusing on cybersecurity, cyberwar and internet security and freedom; Sascha Meinrath, founder of New America’s Open Technology Institute and director of X-Lab; Daniel Rothenberg, co-director of the “Future of War” project, fellow at New America, professor of practice at Arizona State University, and co-editor of Drone Wars.

The “Future of War” project will hold its first annual conference February 24-25, 2015, in Washington, D.C., to draw together leading experts and policy makers to discuss developments in the fields of international and national security law and policy, defense and counterterrorism operations and policy, and cyber-security.
