Farms, Factories, and the Fate of Our Food

How America's meat industry is returning to The Jungle
Event

We are returning to The Jungle. That is the sobering conclusion of a new book about the modern meat industry, in which investigative journalist and author Ted Genoways shows how modern meat companies are speeding up production lines and pushing the supply chain to the breaking point. Faster line speeds at slaughterhouses are harming workers, endangering food safety and hurting rural communities, with practices that seem torn from the pages of Upton Sinclair's classic expose, "The Jungle."

In The Chain: Farm, Factory, and the Fate of Our Food, Genoways goes deep inside the modern pork industry, and examines the impact of new federal policies that allow meat companies like Hormel to ramp up production. This story is happening in small towns, far away from the national media, but the impact is felt by anyone who eats meat.

New America is pleased to welcome Ted Genoways for a discussion of his book, and what changing meat safety policies will mean for the future of our food supply.
